About massage for babies
Massage for Babies is run by Sally Cranfield who has been teaching infant massage to mothers since 1991. She is a qualified adult massage therapist who took up this gentle art when her second daughter was born.
"I wanted to massage my first child but, even though I was a massage therapist, I lacked the confidence to try it, having never massaged a baby before. By the time I had my second child I was more used to handling an infant. I began to massage my younger daughter and realised there was a need for infant massage classes."
Sally began to teach classes in Sussex where she lived and then went on to train in a large group with Peter Walker. She spent 10 years working with mothers and carers before developing her own instructor training courses for practitioners who prefer hands-on learning in small groups, with real mothers and their babies.
To have first hand experience of massaging babies is an invaluable part of the learning process. When students qualify and go on to teach parents they will probably choose to use dolls but because of hands-on knowledge this instruction will be real and alive to the sensitivity of the baby and in no way mechanical.
Since her courses were launched in 2002, dozens of midwives, health visitors, massage practitioners and body workers have qualified, receiving the Massage for Babies certificate which is accredited by Embody CThA and recognised nationally. She has also run courses designed specifically for groups of health and family workers.
Sally continues to give classes for mothers, at Dolphin House Children's Clinic and at Dyke Road Clinic, in Brighton, Sussex.
